Knowledge in Motion - Science and Medicine in the Islamic World - online lecture series

The Centre is delighted to be involved in a new series of online lectures Knowledge in Motion - Science and Medicine in the Islamic World created by the History of Science Museum, Oxford in partnership with the Oxford Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology and the Oxford Centre for Global History.

The four online lectures will take place through October - January feature talks by Dr Taha Yasin Arslan of Medeniyet University, Istanbul, Professor Julia Bray at Oriental Studies, Oxford, and Daniel Burt of the Khalili Research Centre, Oxford. Topics include the evolution of instruments of observation and calculation in the Islamic world between the 9th and 16th centuries and transmission of knowledge between the East and West, a new digitisation project which provides access to Arabic astronomical books and manuscripts as annotated by seventeenth-century Oxford astronomers, a public engagement project which focuses on developing board and card games on the subject of Medieval Islamic Science and Medicine, as well as a wider debate on new definitions of "science", what we can we call a science, what makes it science.
